Music and visual art share a powerful connection. When I create collages, I often find myself drawn to certain songs that shape the mood, colours, and themes of my work. These songs do more than just play in the background; their lyrics and emotions seep into the layers of paper and paint, guiding my creative choices. In this post, I want to share the top five songs that inspired my latest collages. I will describe the lyrics that moved me, explain why I chose each song, and reveal how I want you, the viewer, to feel when you see the finished pieces.
"She's a Carnival" inspired by Siouxie and the Banshees - song inspired art blog
The lyrics of "She's a Carnival" speak about a woman that is both mesmerizing and individual, she is portrayed as a dazzling figure with a chaotic persona, the carnival representing her captivating essence and wild behaviour. Lines like “In the heat of the night she smiles like Mardi Gras” capture a mixture of fun attraction but also danger with a powerful allure. This song inspired me to use busy, strong, vibrant colours and bold images in the forefront with a more muted background in my collage to reflect the frenzied balance between friendliness and dazzling captivation.
I chose this song because it reminds me of individuality growing up as a teenager, the struggle to find the real me without influence, the music, the clothes and the friendships. When you look at this collage, I want you to immerse yourself in the images and be in the moment, i want you to explore 'you' as your own unique persona and re-visit the inner you with that feeling of joyous nostalgia.
2. "Pure" inspired by The Lightning Seeds
The Lightning Seeds storytelling in "Pure" is upbeat and honest. The lyrics tell a story of celebration, love and comfort, and the desire to preserve a moment. The line” Just lying smiling in the dark, shooting stars around your heart" captures a precious moment of realisation, of innocence and genuine feelings. This song inspired me to include fresh, carefree colour and contrasting lyric relating images in my collage, symbolizing not only the lyrics but also the feelings and the emotions felt when making some personal, authentic connections.
I chose this song because its narrative is deeply genuine and relatable to many. The emotions of longing to cherish the present and preserve a moment comes through in every bright and cheerful note. I want viewers to feel the optimism and love in the song and to relate to my collage as a piece that mirrors the song’s emotional depth.
3. "Strawberry Fields" inspired by The Beatles
"Strawberry Fields" is inspired by a personal and symbolic song about childhood memories. The lyrics “Living is easy with eyes closed” expresses a dreamlike sense about reality and the mind confusion it brings. I have focused on this aspect of the song in this collage and have used layered images, clashing colour, cascading shape and text in my collage, creating a surreal, distorted sense of reality.
I chose this song because it captures a vulnerability and uncertainty , it allows the mind to express itself and also offers escape. When you see this collage, I want you to feel uplifted and receive a feeling of belonging to acknowledge your own personal overwhelms.
4. "Love is a Wonderful Colour" inspired by The Icicle Works
This song bursts with energy and optimism. The lyrics “Love is a beacon on the horizon” celebrates positivity and how, if you let it, love can be vibrant and multifaceted just like beautiful colour. The vibrant rhythms alongside the haunting voice in comparison, gives the song a hopeful anticipation, evoking feelings of both love and new found calmness, these aspects inspired me to use bright colours alongside some more cooler colours and bold shapes in my collage, conveying a sense of release and contentment.
I chose this song because it reminds me of past times in my own life, it lifts the spirit and encourages letting go of past burdens. The collage reflects this by combining chaotic elements, vibrant colour and depth that then resolve into harmony. I want viewers to feel uplifted, optimistic and energized, as if they are stepping into a new chapter full of possibility.
5. "Silver" inspired by Echo and the Bunnymen
This song carries a deep sense of nostalgia and youthful escape. The lyrics “Walked on a tidal wave, laughed in the face of a new day" evokes memories of liberation and escape, it feels fresh, confident and determined. I hope to have captured the vibrant, optimistic melody with intuitive shape, found images and a fresh colour palette.
I chose this song because it resonates with the memories of youth, the twists and turns and the experiences of growing up and finding yourself as you live your own, special, individual life. The collage invites viewers to reflect on their own pasts, to feel the weight of what was and the hope for what might still come. I want this piece to evoke a bright, positive, energetic mood.
